No. 17 Baseball Takes First Game in Albany State Series

Sharks take the first of three in their first home series of the season.

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla.
- The No. 17 Nova Southeastern baseball team (3-1) captured their first win Friday at home in a three game series against the visiting Albany State Golden Rams (0-1), with the final score 5-1.

Anthony Angulo (Sr., Homestead, Fla.) led the Sharks offensively, going 2-for-3 with one run and one RBI. Zachary Westcott (Jr., Weston, Fla.) picked up his first win from the mound in his second start of the season. Westcott, in seven innings pitched, faced 24 batters, knocking down eight and allowing only five hits and one run on the evening.

NSU got on the board first with a RBI double to left field by William Rudolph (Jr., Parkland, Fla.), which rounded Angulo, who earlier singled to left field and advanced to second by way of a wild pitch. After reaching on a fielder’s choice, Brett Clements (Sr., Riverview, Fla.) reached home on a throwing error, which gave NSU a two run lead after two innings.

Albany State cut the lead in half in the top of the fourth, with an RBI single up the middle by Allen Hardy, which rounded Kerry Hall. This proved to be the last run scored for the Golden Rams.

The Sharks extended their lead in the top of the seventh on a SAC fly RBI to right field by Carlos Asuaje (So., Weston, Fla.). Eric Acevedo (Sr., Miami, Fla.), who reached earlier on a single up the middle, scored on the play. The senior returner was put in position after he advanced to second on a single to center field by Blake Boyd (Sr., Jupiter, Fla.) and stole third. The Sharks stranded a runner but ended the inning up two runs, 3-1.

Two more runs were chalked up for NSU in the top of the eighth on a stand-up RBI double to centerfield by Julian Loret de Mola (So., Miami, Fla.), which scored Alex Marrero (Sr., Miami, Fla.) after being walked during his at bat to extend the lead, 4-1. Loret de Mola scored the final run for NSU off a single to left field by Angulo to solidify the final score at 5-1.

It took solid defense and excellent pitching by Mike Gonzalez (Sr., Miami, Fla.) to close the game out for NSU and take the first of a three-game series with the Golden Rams.

The Sharks take the field once again tomorrow for a doubleheader against Albany State, with first the first pitch scheduled for noon at the NSU Baseball Complex.
